{"id":150,"date":"2011-06-17T14:34:15","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T20:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/?p=150"},"modified":"2011-07-06T07:00:38","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:00:38","slug":"accessibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/2011\/06\/17\/accessibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Accessibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things that has recently impacted my online teaching practice, is being able to provide accommodations to students who have diverse needs.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s made me think much closer about the issues surrounding accessibility in online learning environments.\u00a0 Now that I\u2019m designing a course in Moodle, I\u2019m discovering it is critical in terms of educational design\u2026.right from the base level.\u00a0 It\u2019s a daunting task in some ways, as it\u2019s my responsibility to make sure my course is accessible to a diverse group of learners who may have countless different needs to accommodate.<\/p>\n<p>When I went through many of the links in the eTool-Kit for accessibility, I was completely lost.\u00a0 So much of what is there I just don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 But not understanding did send me on a quest to find information, and I did learn many things.\u00a0 I still don\u2019t know all I need to, but I\u2019m making headway.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the things I made note of were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remove any tools not needed in the course<\/li>\n<li>Fewer items on the screen speed things up for those using screen readers<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t leave empty or needless folders viewable<\/li>\n<li>Enhance accessibility of content links \u2013 link titles, use appropriate clear icons, be consistent<\/li>\n<li>Moodle 2.0 has an accessibility block\u2026.very cool!<\/li>\n<li>Browser setting can be adjusted \u2013 font, size, colour, minimum size, etc.<\/li>\n<li>The layout, structure, and content of pages are very significant<\/li>\n<li>Include both visual and non-visual cues<\/li>\n<li>Ensure all controls can be accessed through enter or space keys, and be sure tabbing follows a logical sequence<\/li>\n<li>For images, label with alternative text<\/li>\n<li>Balance text and images used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the things I\u2019ve found in Moodle is that it isn\u2019t easy to make certain accommodations.\u00a0 This semester I had a student who needed more time on quizzes because of her disability.\u00a0 This was a challenge in Moodle.\u00a0 Fortunately, I had support and a way to accommodate my student was found.<\/p>\n<p>Next on my list of things to learn in terms of accessibility, is what is involved when using video.\u00a0 I\u2019ve googled \u201cflash\u201d to try to get an idea of what it is, but I don\u2019t understand what\u2019s involved as it pertains to developing my moodle course.\u00a0 Always something to learn\u2026.which I guess is a good thing!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things that has recently impacted my online teaching practice, is being able to provide accommodations to students who have diverse needs.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s made me think much closer about the issues surrounding accessibility in online learning environments.\u00a0 Now that I\u2019m designing a course in Moodle, I\u2019m discovering it is critical in terms of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7242,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3600],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-150","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tool-kit"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/150","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/7242"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=150"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/150\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":196,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/150\/revisions\/196"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=150"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=150"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=150"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
