{"id":174,"date":"2011-06-28T11:10:45","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T17:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/?p=174"},"modified":"2011-07-06T06:59:52","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T12:59:52","slug":"mlearning-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/2011\/06\/28\/mlearning-revisited\/","title":{"rendered":"mLearning Revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve now had my first real interaction with an iPad.\u00a0 I have looked at one briefly a couple of times, but I spent several hours \u201cplaying\u201d yesterday. My College EdTech specialist has one staff can sign out, so I\u2019ve got it for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>I had no trouble accessing ETEC565, but I couldn\u2019t get to the Moodle course I\u2019m developing.\u00a0 It said, \u201cCannot open page \u2013 Safari cannot open the page because the server could not be found\u201d.\u00a0 I was able to get to the courses in Moodle that I teach for the College of the Rockies though, so did some experimenting there.\u00a0 It was very easy to access discussion forums and post, and to edit add content.\u00a0 No problem!\u00a0 Things loaded very quickly.\u00a0 I was quite impressed!<\/p>\n<p>However, not having any hand held devices on my own, I found my lack of experience created a lot of frustration.\u00a0 How many times did I scroll up when I was trying to scroll down?\u00a0 And typing on the small keypad\u2026.so slow.\u00a0 I had some trouble navigating, but learned several things fairly quickly.\u00a0 I googled several things (and I have to admit, finally grabbed my laptop so I could google faster!) and that helped.\u00a0 I figured out how to copy text and images, which once you know what to do, it is a very simple process.<\/p>\n<p>I spent a lot of time trying out various apps that other faculty had downloaded. I even found a Moodle Touch app, but it was for 2.0 so couldn\u2019t try it out. My favourite app was the iBooks.\u00a0 I could spend hours&#8230;.but homework beckoned.<\/p>\n<p>I can see how many people would love this.\u00a0 There is an unending list of apps to explore, and some great resources for both home and work life.\u00a0 For me, the bulk of what I do I use my laptop for, and the iPad slows me down.\u00a0 The keyboarding is just painful for me.\u00a0 I know I could get a keyboard to use with the iPad, but that\u2019s what I have my laptop for!\u00a0 If I did a lot of travelling, the iPad would be awesome.\u00a0 It\u2019s small, light, and convenient.\u00a0 I could maintain contact with my students, update my Moodle courses if needed, and not have to lug around a larger piece of equipment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_7847.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-176\" title=\"iPad\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_7847-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>My kids now\u2026they vote YES to buying an iPad.\u00a0 They would spend hours on long road trips keeping very entertained.\u00a0 If the battery life was longer (10 hours isn\u2019t enough when you\u2019re away from electricity!) it would be a great option.\u00a0 I\u2019m still weighing the pros and cons.\u00a0 I\u2019m getting something this summer, be it an iPad or some kind of eReader, but am still not sure.\u00a0 The iPad does SO much more than an eReader, and I would hate to underestimate my potential usage and buy the wrong thing\u2026.especially being so new to this kind of technology.<\/p>\n<p>Decisions, decisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve now had my first real interaction with an iPad.\u00a0 I have looked at one briefly a couple of times, but I spent several hours \u201cplaying\u201d yesterday.
