Examples of English 301 Pieces

English 301 is a four month course that requires students to produce many technical and professional writing pieces. The course instructor, Dr. Erika Patterson, was responsible for evaluating the assignments for marks.

Below are PDF’s of some of my best writing pieces from English 301.

Unit 1

An assignment that involved choosing a relatively complex term from my field of study and providing a parenthetical, sentence, and expanded definition of the term. Dr. Patterson noted that my assignment was impressive, with no suggestions for improvement.

Unit 2

A formal report proposal outlining a community problem (unnecessary wait times at UBC’s Birdcoop Fitness Center), methods to gather primary and secondary research, and proposed solutions. No formal mark was given for the assignment.

Unit 3

A complaint letter based on a real life experience involving an error on a bill, rude service, a mistake in delivery, or poor quality of a product. I chose to write about an experience I had at a Dairy Queen, where I observed behavior that was not food safe.  The purpose of the letter was to deliver the complaint in a way that persuades the audience to respond in a certain way. The mark for the assignment was not available at the time the Web Folio was submitted.

Unit 4

A peer review of another students application package who was applying for a job related to their field of study. The mark for the assignment was not available at the time the Web Folio was submitted.
