At UBC, faculty members are hired into one of two “streams”:

  • the Research Stream, where promotion depends on a combination of teaching, scholarly activity, and service; of
  • the Educational Leadership Stream, where promotion depends on a combination of teaching, educational leadership, and service.

My position at UBC is in the second of these streams, and some of my educational leadership responsibilities are listed below:

  • Faculty Reviewer, UBC Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) Peer Review of Teaching
  • Leading faculty workshops at UBC’s 9th Annual Celebrate Learning Week 
    • “Advanced academic writing in the social sciences and humanities: Using ‘genre’ and ‘writing in the disciplines’ research to help students assume the role of ‘scholar’”
    • “Facilitating online peer review: Using STUDIORUM to promote student engagement”
    • “Facilitating reflection on student presentations: Using CLAS to promote critical self-reflection and online peer review”
  • Promoting upper-level academic writing opportunities for students in the Faculty of Arts
    • contributing statistical and other information to the ASRW Chair’s Category 1 curriculum change submission to renumber and rename ASTU 400a
    • briefing Arts Advising and the Associate Dean, Academic, regarding ASTU 400a, with a view to better advising transfer and upper-level students about fulfilling their Writing Requirement
    • contributed to designing an intensive 6-week summer version of this course
  • Collaborating with UBC Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication (CWSC) 
    • piloting an in-person and online “writing community” for first-year students in UBC’s Bachelor of International Economics program
    • training CWSC Peer Consultants (paid student tutors)
    • training Peer Reviewers for UBC student-run journal, INK (Ideas, Numbers, Knowledge)
  • Faculty affiliate, Language Services Initiative
    • piloting a podcast on language sciences
