{"id":2,"date":"2015-04-21T16:38:36","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T16:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iandthou\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2016-08-17T19:45:55","modified_gmt":"2016-08-18T02:45:55","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iandthou\/sample-page\/","title":{"rendered":"Biography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Among other things, I am a <a title=\"Critical discourse analysis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.discourses.org\/OldArticles\/Critical%20discourse%20analysis.pdf\"><strong>critical discourse analyst<\/strong><\/a> with a doctoral degree in <a title=\"PhD in Applied Linguistics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ling.lancs.ac.uk\/study\/phd\/appling.htm#aims\"><strong>Applied Linguistics<\/strong><\/a> from <a title=\"Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University\" href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.ling.lancs.ac.uk\/\"><strong>Lancaster University, UK<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I am also<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an <strong>Instructor<\/strong> within the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/asrw.arts.ubc.ca\/\">Arts Studies in Research and Writing<\/a> <\/strong>unit at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubc.ca\/\">University of British Columbia<\/a><\/strong> (UBC), Vancouver, Canada;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secretary<\/strong> for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/InternationalGenderandLanguageAssociationIGALA?fref=ts\/Index.html\">International Gender and Language Association<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"IGALA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/InternationalGenderandLanguageAssociationIGALA?fref=ts\/Index.html\">IGALA<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>Managing Editor<\/strong> with the journal <a title=\"Secularism and Nonreligion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ling.lancs.ac.uk\/\"><strong><em>Secularism and Nonreligion<\/em><\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>a reviewer with various linguistics journals, and<\/li>\n<li>a member of the following <strong>professional associations: <\/strong>American Association of Applied Linguistics (<a title=\"American Association of Applied Linguistics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aaal.org\/\">AAAL<\/a>), British Association of Applied Linguistics (<a title=\"British Association of Applied Linguistics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baal.org.uk\/\">BAAL<\/a>), Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing (<a title=\"CASDW\" href=\"https:\/\/casdwacr.wordpress.com\/\">CASDW<\/a>), Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States (<a title=\"LACUS\" href=\"http:\/\/lacus.weebly.com\/\">LACUS<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My doctoral dissertation involved an interdisciplinary study of religious and other public sphere discourses in Canada, drawing on <strong>various linguistic approaches<\/strong> (in particular the <a title=\"Discourse Historical Approach\" href=\"http:\/\/www.univie.ac.at\/linguistics\/forschung\/wittgenstein\/unemploy\/bristol5.htm\">Discourse Historical Approach<\/a>, <a title=\"Membership Categorization Analysis\" href=\"http:\/\/static.sdu.dk\/mediafiles\/Files\/Om_SDU\/Institutter\/ISK\/SoPraCon\/EDMIDI%20professor%20presentations\/DennisDay.pdf\">Membership Categorization Analysis<\/a>, <a title=\"narrative analysis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/~mbamberg\/LabovWaletzky.htm\">narrative<\/a> and <a title=\"the stance triangle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linguistics.ucsb.edu\/faculty\/dubois\/DuBois_2007_Stance_Triangle_M.pdf\">stance analysis<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I am interested in <strong>discursive constructions of identity<\/strong> &#8211; particularly at the intersections of religiosity\/secularism and gender\/sexuality &#8211; and enjoy contributing to the formation of apprentice scholars through my teaching at UBC.
