\nProfessor of Media & Technology Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stephen Petrina is a Media and Technology Studies specialist, cultural historian, and critical educator. \u00a0He is a Professor (Media & Technology Studies<\/a>) in the\u00a0Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0University of British Columbia<\/a>. \u00a0He has advised to completion over 60 Masters and PhD students and has 100+ interdisciplinary publications. Currently he is exploring the interconnections between digital media and learning and is Director of the\u00a0How We Learn Media & Technology (Across the Lifespan<\/a>) lab and project. The emphasis is on design and engineering cognition.<\/p>\n

Actively researching academic freedom, he is co-Editor (with E. Wayne Ross)\u00a0of\u00a0Workplace: A Journal for Academic Labor<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and blogs with Wayne at the\u00a0Workplace blog<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0He is co-founder and co-Director, with Sandra Mathison and E. Wayne Ross, of the\u00a0Institute for Critical Education Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other projects include books titled\u00a0Technology, Religion, Spirituality and the Sacred<\/em>,\u00a0Techontologies: The Critical Ontology of Media and Technology<\/em>,\u00a0Twentieth Century Learning<\/em>, and\u00a0Education, Medicine, and the Psy-ences<\/em>.\u00a0 This fourth book includes a major article titled \u201cMedical Liberty<\/a>\u201d published in the December 2008 issue of the\u00a0Journal of Medical Humanities<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Recent major articles or chapters include an analysis of the critique of critique (a la Latour and Ranciere) in\u00a0The New Critiquette and Old Scholactivism: A Petit Critique of Academic Manners, Managers, Matters, and Freedom<\/a>\u00a0and an entirely new paradigm for new media and technologies in “Postliterate Machineries.” This latest chapter basically spells the end of new literacies.<\/p>\n

Dr. Petrina has also published a textbook titled\u00a0Advanced Teaching Methods for the Technology Classroom<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2007) and a collection of essays on the critical theory of design and technology education.\u00a0 Recent articles appear in the\u00a0History of Education Quarterly<\/em>\u00a0(e.g., “Preschools for Science,” award winning article with Penney Clark and Mona Gleason),\u00a0History of Psychology<\/em>,\u00a0Technology and Culture<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0International Journal of Technology and Design Education<\/em>.<\/p>\n
