{"id":254,"date":"2012-03-09T23:27:55","date_gmt":"2012-03-10T06:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/?p=254"},"modified":"2012-03-09T23:44:48","modified_gmt":"2012-03-10T06:44:48","slug":"secondary-students-assert-power-at-the-bc-rallies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/2012\/03\/09\/secondary-students-assert-power-at-the-bc-rallies\/","title":{"rendered":"Secondary Students Assert Power at the BC Rallies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over a three day stretch, secondary students organized, marched, walked, spoke, and shouted out against oppressive labour legislation in British Columbia and for their teachers and the BCTF. \u00a0It&#8217;s rare that secondary students get opportunities to unify as a political force at the provincial level, but now in this labour dispute the students are making a difference. \u00a0On Friday, 2 March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BVOuDxCKmew\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of students walked out of their classes and schools and rallied across the province<\/a>. \u00a0In Vancouver, the students descended en masse for a rally at the gallery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0109.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-255\" title=\"IMG_0109\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0109-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0109-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0109.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0129.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-256\" title=\"IMG_0129\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0129-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0129-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ices\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_0129.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On Tuesday, 6 March, at the BC Fed and BCTF rally hundreds of the youth marched with the unions down Government Street and to the steps of the BC Legislature. \u00a0For the crowd of 6,000, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lGgkGyDZ4uo&amp;list=PL88CE1F09E2C42F02&amp;index=9&amp;feature=plpp_video\" target=\"_blank\">two young women,\u00a0Hannah Case and Erin Galbraith, spoke a lotta truth to a power<\/a> undermining their teachers&#8217; rights. \u00a0 In Vancouver, on 7 March for the rally at the gallery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0OeR-cJDZSM\" target=\"_blank\">secondary students Navi Rai and Melissa Wong stood together on the steps and voiced their support<\/a> for the teachers&#8217; rights and their right to a fair government. \u00a0Both were active in organizing Friday&#8217;s walkout. \u00a0And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=kE3yLHAGHfM\" target=\"_blank\">raising the roof of nature, Chandler McCorkingdale rapped<\/a>. \u00a0Sorry, BC Liberals, the students and the public are standing with the teachers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now, where in the world are the missing BC post-secondary students, especially the Education majors?
