In a tragic coincidence, on 9 September 2013 as the Federal Government of Canada was announcing plans to introduce cyberbullying legislation,\u00a0<\/span>Todd Loik committed suicide<\/a>. His mother said\u00a0“It was non-stop taunting” from about two years ago, with posts on Facebook– “nastiness,” she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

This past Wednesday, 20 November 2013, the Federal Government introduced Bill C-13<\/a>,\u00a0legislation to criminalize certain actions that have been at the base of some of the more tragic cyberbullying cases in Canada.\u00a0It is not a Cyberbullying Bill per se but can be seen as a preventive measure (see\u00a0<\/span>Bill C-13, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cyberbullying legislation was proposed in the past by various parties at the Federal level but nothing has been approved. See for example,\u00a0<\/span>Bill C-273<\/a>\u00a0(2011) and\u00a0<\/span>Bill M-385<\/a>\u00a0(2012).<\/span><\/p>\n

This latest measure,\u00a0<\/span>Bill C-13<\/a>,\u00a0seems to have support of all parties. \u00a0It is based on the FPT meeting of October 2012\u00a0This resulted in the\u00a0<\/span>Cyberbullying and Non-Consensual Distribution of Intimate Images report<\/a>, released in June 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
