{"id":863,"date":"2015-01-19T21:57:42","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T05:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/?page_id=863"},"modified":"2024-04-26T10:36:50","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T18:36:50","slug":"educational-development","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/current-work\/educational-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Educational Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/UCPuj9\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4275\/34547211300_e88d1d1f31.jpg\" alt=\"#csshe World Cafe: Possible Canada: Educator&#039;s Vision of Higher Education in the next 150 years #viznotes #congressh\" width=\"500\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This page of my portfolio briefly describes some of my current educational developer (ED) responsibilities and activities at the UBC Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, where I am a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ctlt.ubc.ca\/about\/people\/teaching-learning-professional-development\/\">Teaching and Learning Professional Development\u00a0team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0CTLT initiatives\u00a0I am most deeply involved with are:<\/p>\n<h2>Formative Peer Review of Teaching Initiatives<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>What<\/em>:\u00a0<\/strong>CTLT <a href=\"http:\/\/ctlt.ubc.ca\/programs\/all-our-programs\/peer-review-of-teaching\/peer-review-of-teaching-2\/\">Formative Peer Review of Teaching Program<\/a> (PRT) provides opportunities for people to build skills as peer reviewers, explore alternative peer review processes, discuss challenges, share resources, and learn from each others&#8217; expertise and ideas.<br \/>\n<strong><em>My role<\/em>:<\/strong>\u00a0Lead, design, and advance formative peer review of teaching initiatives to support members of the UBC community in their professional growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Specifically, I:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manage and promote the CTLT <a href=\"http:\/\/ctlt.ubc.ca\/programs\/all-our-programs\/peer-review-of-teaching-2\/\">formative peer review of teaching program<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Work with individuals, departments, and programs interested in implementing PRT<\/li>\n<li>Lead workshops to help participants develop skills as peer reviewers of teaching<\/li>\n<li>Build online resources relevant to the peer review of teaching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I have been involved with CTLT&#8217;s PRT program since 2008.<\/p>\n<h2>Teaching Development Program (TDP) for New Faculty<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am part of a team that collaborates to design and implement the <a href=\"https:\/\/ctlt.ubc.ca\/programs\/faculty-programs\/new-to-ubc\/teaching-development-program-for-new-faculty\/\">TDP<\/a>, an 8-month program for new faculty at the UBC-Vancouver and UBC-Okanagan campuses. I am currently the co-lead of that program.<\/p>\n<h2>Educational Leadership<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Though the Educational Leadership &#8220;track&#8221; has been in existence for over 10 years at UBC, there continues to be a need to build our collective understanding of what educational leadership is.I have been involved in supporting this endeavour. Also, in my consultation work, I frequently support faculty in articulating their EL contributions and crafting their narrative.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Consultations\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I regularly conduct confidential one-on-one consultations with instructors who are growing in their roles as teachers and educational leaders.\u00a0 Topics include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to respond to student feedback on my teaching?<\/li>\n<li>Course design<\/li>\n<li>Developing my educational leadership<\/li>\n<li>Creating a teaching philosophy statement and\/or teaching dossier<\/li>\n<li>Preparing to submit for tenure\/promotion<\/li>\n<li>and more&#8230;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">As a <a href=\"http:\/\/isabeauiqbal.com\">certified coach<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/\">International Coaching Federation<\/a>, I bring a coaching approach to my consultations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Teaching Portfolios\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I regularly provide feedback to faculty members on their teaching portfolios. I also develop the Teaching Portfolio <a href=\"http:\/\/ctlt.ubc.ca\/resources\/teaching\/portfolios\/\">section of the CTLT<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<h2>Facilitation<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As part of my educational development work, I facilitate workshops and processes\u00a0relevant to enhancing teaching and learning in higher education. I have facilitated workshops on a variety of topics, including, but not limited to: peer review of teaching, learning-centered syllabus, and course goals and learning objectives.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/2012\/12\/20\/workshops-facilitated-2\/\">For a partial list of workshops and processes I have facilitated while working as an educational developer at UBC, see here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Course Design Intensive<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am a core member of the\u00a0planning and facilitation team for the <a href=\"http:\/\/ctlt.ubc.ca\/programs\/all-our-programs\/course-design-intensive\/\">Course Design Intensive<\/a>\u00a0(CDI), a 3-day workshop for instructors seeking to design or re-design a course.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Note 1: I began my work as an educational developer in 2003, with the Centre for Teaching and Academic Growth (now CTLT). \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/2015\/09\/07\/ctlt-work-historical-2003-2013\/\">For a brief description of initiatives I was involved with at CTLT between 2003-2013, see here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note 2: From 2013-2015, I had the pleasure of working at the Office of Educational Support and Development in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
