{"id":1289,"date":"2015-10-15T04:40:49","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T12:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/?p=1289"},"modified":"2017-01-25T15:01:24","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T23:01:24","slug":"scholarship-of-educational-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/2015\/10\/15\/scholarship-of-educational-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholarship of Educational Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elon.edu\/e-web\/academics\/teaching\/catlHome.xhtml\">Deandra Little<\/a>&#8216;s article titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/tia2.20005\/abstract\">Reflections on the State of the Scholarship of Educational Development<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of hearing\u00a0Deandra present at different conferences and enjoy her work; this article was no exception.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1291\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/files\/2015\/10\/deandra2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1291\" class=\"wp-image-1291 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/files\/2015\/10\/deandra2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Deandra Little\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deandra Little<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Below, I have written down a few quotes that particularly stood out for me during my first read of the article\u00a0[see note 1 at bottom]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Educational development: &#8220;the profession dedicated to helping colleges and universities function effectively as teaching and learning communities&#8221; (from\u00a0<span class=\"author\">Felten, <\/span><span class=\"author\">Kalish, <\/span><span class=\"author\">Pingree<\/span>, &amp; <span class=\"author\">Plank,<\/span>\u00a02007, p.93) [love this definition and am going to add it to my portfolio]<\/li>\n<li>We strive to be the &#8220;<strong>learning partners of choice<\/strong>&#8221; (Debowski, 2011, p.320) in our communities<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;We have&#8230;been hesitant to claim leadership roles as we promote and collaborate on institutional projects (Shroeder &amp; Associates, 2011), preferring often to <strong>cultivate change quietly<\/strong>, indirectly, or in partnership&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>When we research and publish the scholarship of educational development <strong>we need to keep asking<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>What knowledge bases do we build on and add to? What new things are we saying about something old?<\/li>\n<li>What old approaches might productively help explain new evidence?<\/li>\n<li>More broadly: What topic areas do we want to explore and what research questions do they pose?<\/li>\n<li>How many different approaches and methods can we use to create the fullest possible picture of that topic?<\/li>\n<li>What possibilities are we overlooking?<\/li>\n<li>(I have modified the formatting of this last quote to make the questions stand out more)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note 1:\u00a0The article as a whole is worth reading and the ideas above are just a few that stood out for me.
