{"id":1570,"date":"2016-04-17T10:35:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-17T18:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/?p=1570"},"modified":"2017-02-18T10:03:07","modified_gmt":"2017-02-18T18:03:07","slug":"helpful-coaching-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/2016\/04\/17\/helpful-coaching-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Helpful coaching questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/rrdkqF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8609\/16694238291_5fd7dc120e.jpg\" alt=\"Eagle\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I recently listened to an excellent conversation\u00a0between\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofcrayons.biz\/about-box-of-crayons\/michael-bungay-stanier\/\">Michael Bungay Stanier<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/coachingforleaders.com\/start\/\">David\u00a0Stachowiak<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/coachingforleaders.com\/podcast\/237\/\">Coaching for Leaders podcast<\/a>. The theme of the episode was &#8220;<strong>These coaching questions get results<\/strong>&#8221; and, at the end, Michael invited listeners to\u00a0reflect on how they might use the information. I&#8217;m taking him up on the invitation.<\/p>\n<p>As you might know from reading some of my <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/tag\/helping\/\">previous posts<\/a>, I am keenly interested in exploring the &#8216;helping role&#8217; of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/iiqbal\/2013\/01\/21\/educational-developer-a-definition\/\">educational developers<\/a>. \u00a0Michael talked about coaching as helping people learn versus teaching them. I liked that distinction. I recognize, however, that as an educational developer, I do both; yet, when in &#8216;coaching&#8217; mode, I need\u00a0to remind myself\u00a0where to focus.<\/p>\n<p>Bungay Stanier also talked about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofcrayons.biz\/category\/best-question\/\">power of questions<\/a> and the importance\u00a0of asking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coachingforchange.com\/pub10.html\">good questions<\/a> (remember to\u00a0wait, he reminds us). These are some questions I especially liked and will use\/continue using:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;what is on your mind?&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>I like this one because it leaves the response open and doesn&#8217;t assume the conversation is going to be focussed on topic A\/problem B.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;and what else?&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>I like this question because it allows the conversation partners to go deeper, but doesn&#8217;t assume a particular direction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I chuckled when Bungay Stanier said\u00a0:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A statement\u00a0that starts with &#8220;Have you considered&#8230;.?&#8221; is really just &#8216;advice disguised as a question&#8217;!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yikes! That is one change I&#8217;m going to make!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he suggested incorporating the following into a coaching conversation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What was most valuable about our conversation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t been using that question when I coach\/help because I feel some discomfort about doing so (mainly around worrying that I&#8217;m looking for compliments). But others have used it &#8216;on me&#8217; and I&#8217;ve typically\u00a0appreciated the opportunity to reflect on&#8211;and\u00a0solidify&#8211;what has been most useful.
