In meeting 6 we examined the emergence of various artistic movements throughout the 20th Century. These movements, also referred to as artistic avant-garde had several common characteristics:
- They responded to important economical, cultural and technological changes taking place in their society
- They felt that the nature of those changes were so profound that demanded new means of expression: new realities can only be properly described through new languages. Accordingly, they advanced new aesthetic agendas.
- As their concerns involved questions beyond the artistic, they seek to challenge the constrains of the artworld (often promoting the idea of non-art or anti- art) looking for ways to communicate to a wider audience.
For the rest of the term we are going to make such attempts. So far we have worked on developing the means to examine the world around us. As we continue to do so, we also will share our ideas and concerns with the rest of our UBC community.
To achieve this, we are going to initiate a project in which the works created for our class will be displayed everyday, between 12:00 and 2:00 pm, in all screens installed across campus.
We will share this project with others, including MFA students, faculty and established local artists. Ours is one in a larger set of initiatives by a group of UBC faculty aiming to reassess the place of the arts in education and society.
