What does a painting depict?
Plato, Aristotle and formalism
Plato- art as truth/ art- art as lie- art is considered a ‘bad copy’ of reality and thus missleading and untrustworthy.
Aristotle- art does not represent things as they are, but as they should be- idealized. Is not about reality but about what is within, internal potentials
Renaissance, barroque
Painting as translation: relation with a visible reality- painting as rendering
Painting also implicitly depicts and communicate a particular relation/understanding of reality. The examples considered from the Renaissance moment were powerful messages of the new place occupied by humans in the world.
Photography- the pencil of nature. The notion that Photography could give us un-mediated access to a fragment of the real created the conditions for the advent of documentary and scientific photography
Russian propaganda- Rodchenko and photography posters.
Man with a Movie Camera- life itself
