Why have you been asked to write one? How on earth do you start to write a Letter of Support? Chances are, if you\u2019re a patient partner in the research environment, you\u2019ve asked yourself or someone else one of these questions as part of your role.<\/p>\n<p>This resource has been co-created by patient partners based on their own experiences related to Letters of Support. We\u2019ve created this resource for you if you\u2019re a patient partner and you\u2019ve been asked to write a Letter of Support for a researcher or research team. LOS are usually provided by people or organizations that will be involved in the proposed research project. Within the letter, information may be provided about how those people or organizations will contribute to the research, if they will provide any physical support such as money, or non-monetary support (sometimes called \u2018in-kind\u2019 support) and of course, offer their overall support for the proposed research being funded.<\/p>\n<p>Different granting agencies or funding organizations will have different requirements for Letters of Support. These agencies or funding organizations might be government-supported, health charities, patient organizations, philanthropic organizations, and others.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has a <a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/45246.html\">webpage about Letters of Support<\/a> with a lot of helpful guidance as well as some example language and characteristics of strong or weak Letters. This webpage is helpful whether you\u2019ve never written a Letter of Support or have written a number of them.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><u>Deciding if you\u2019ll write a Letter of Support, and if so, the information you might consider or need<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When you\u2019re asked to write a Letter of Support, this may mean that you\u2019re being asked to be part of the research team or it may simply mean that you\u2019re being asked to express support for the research. We have generated some questions that you might ask yourself as well as the researcher or research team that has requested a Letter from you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some questions you might ask yourself when you\u2019re asked to write a Letter of Support. These might also help you with questions that you put together for the researcher or research team as well.\n<ul>\n<li>Am I being asked to provide a Letter of Support to express support only, or will I be on the research team? If I\u2019ll be on the research team \u2013 what does that role look like, and do I have time for it if the research is funded?<\/li>\n<li>Do I know this research team already, for example, have I worked with them before or is this continuing research that I\u2019ve already been part of? Am I comfortable with their ask?<\/li>\n<li>How much time will it take me to write a Letter of Support, and do I have time to do that?<\/li>\n<li>Should I ask the research team to provide me with a draft Letter of Support that I can make my own?<\/li>\n<li>What other questions do I have for the research team specific to this ask?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This list of questions isn\u2019t complete and there may be other questions you might want to ask yourself when you\u2019re asked to write a Letter of Support too.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some questions you might ask the researcher or research team that has asked you to write a Letter of Support.\n<ul>\n<li>What is your timeline for the Letter of Support?<\/li>\n<li>Am I being asked to write a Letter of Support expressing my support only, or will I be part of the research team?<\/li>\n<li>Can you provide me with information for the Letter of Support including who it should be addressed to, if there is a competition name or number that should be referenced, what the name of the research project is, when the project would take place if funded, where would the research be done, and how would I be contributing to the research project and how I would be recognized for this role and work?<\/li>\n<li>Can you help me write this? For example, do you have a template\/guidance\/or a draft Letter of Support that I can make my own? Are there Letter of Support instructions that have been provided by the granting agency or organization that can be shared with me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><u>Writing the Letter of Support<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When you sit down to write the letter, make sure you have all the information from the research team that you need to write the Letter of Support, if they are not providing you with a draft to make your own. Whether or not you\u2019re writing the Letter of Support from scratch, make sure that any personal details you share about your own story and healthcare experiences are only ones you are comfortable sharing. While the Letter of Support may not be shared publicly, you shouldn\u2019t feel pressured to share any details that you don\u2019t wish to.<\/p>\n<p>One approach you might take to writing the Letter of Support is to cover the who, what, where, when, and how of your role and your support for the proposed research. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who is the principal investigator of the application?<\/li>\n<li>What is the title or name of the research project, and what is your role in the research? What does this mean that you\u2019ll be doing as part of the research team?<\/li>\n<li>Where is the research happening? For example, maybe it\u2019s virtual, you\u2019ll meet with the team from time to time in person, or maybe it\u2019s being done in a hybrid way \u2013 some virtual and some in person.<\/li>\n<li>When is the research being done or what is the timeframe for it? Mentioning the length of the research project helps show that you are \u2018in the know\u2019 about the project.<\/li>\n<li>How do your experience and your skills align with the research project and its goals and anticipated outcomes? Remember that you only need to share what you\u2019re comfortable sharing here. And how will the anticipated results of this research contribute overall to knowledge, patient outcomes, etc.?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You might also choose to wrap up your Letter of Support with wishing the researcher success in their application and expressing how you are looking forward to learning about the results of the competition.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><u>Learning what happens after the Letter of Support is submitted<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Usually there is a few months\u2019 time between when a research team submits a grant application to knowing the results of the funding competition. If the research team doesn\u2019t offer it up, it\u2019s more than ok to ask them when you can expect to hear about the results of the competition when you provide your Letter of Support to them.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, sometimes research teams forget to let people who have written Letters of Support about the outcome of the funding competition. It\u2019s not a great feeling when this happens, but it does sometimes happen. If this is the case, don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re bothering anyone if you do reach out to ask about the results of the funding competition and if they\u2019re known yet.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck in your work writing Letters of Support! Elle est habituellement fournie par une personne ou une organisation qui participe \u00e0 la recherche propos\u00e9e, et peut pr\u00e9ciser comment cette personne ou organisation contribuera \u00e0 la recherche (soutien financier, contribution non p\u00e9cuniaire, appui g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019organismes de financement gouvernementaux, philanthropiques ou d\u2019une autre nature, chacun a ses propres exigences au sujet des lettres d\u2019appui.<\/p>\n<p>Les Instituts de recherche en sant\u00e9 du Canada\u00a0(IRSC) disposent d\u2019un <a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/f\/45246.html\">guide de r\u00e9daction des lettres d\u2019appui<\/a>, lequel renferme bon nombre de conseils utiles ainsi que d\u2019exemples de formulation et de caract\u00e9ristiques de lettres efficaces et inefficaces. Ce guide pourra se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler utile aussi bien pour les personnes qui ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9dig\u00e9 de nombreuses lettres d\u2019appui que pour celles qui en sont \u00e0 leurs premi\u00e8res armes.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><u>Les questions particuli\u00e8res<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>On peut vous demander de r\u00e9diger une lettre d\u2019appui pour deux raisons\u00a0: que vous puissiez faire partie de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche; que vous exprimiez votre appui au projet.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Voici une liste non exhaustive de questions que vous pourriez vous poser lorsque l\u2019on vous demande de r\u00e9diger une lettre d\u2019appui. Elles pourraient aussi vous inspirer des questions \u00e0 poser au chercheur ou \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche.\n<ul>\n<li>Est-ce qu\u2019on me demande de fournir une lettre d\u2019appui simplement pour exprimer mon soutien au projet de recherche ou parce ce que je ferai partie de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche? Si je fais partie de l\u2019\u00e9quipe, en quoi consistera mon r\u00f4le et aurai-je le temps de l\u2019assumer?<\/li>\n<li>Est-ce que je connais cette \u00e9quipe de recherche (p. ex. collaboration ant\u00e9rieure)? S\u2019agit-il de la poursuite de travaux auxquels j\u2019ai particip\u00e9? Par exemple, avez-vous un mod\u00e8le ou une \u00e9bauche de lettre d\u2019appui que je pourrais adapter? L\u2019organisme de financement dispose-t-il de directives de r\u00e9daction de lettre d\u2019appui qui pourraient m\u2019\u00eatre transmises?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><u>La r\u00e9daction<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Lorsque vous vous appr\u00eatez \u00e0 r\u00e9diger votre lettre d\u2019appui, assurez-vous d\u2019avoir obtenu toute l\u2019information dont vous avez besoin de la part de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche, surtout si un mod\u00e8le de lettre ne vous est pas fourni. Que vous utilisiez un mod\u00e8le ou non, assurez-vous de ne divulguer que les renseignements personnels (p. ex. \u00e0 propos de votre exp\u00e9rience des soins de sant\u00e9) que vous \u00eates \u00e0 l\u2019aise de divulguer. Bien que la lettre d\u2019appui puisse ne pas \u00eatre rendue publique, vous ne devriez pas vous sentir oblig\u00e9 de fournir des d\u00e9tails que vous ne souhaitez pas divulguer.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019une des m\u00e9thodes que vous pourriez adopter pour r\u00e9diger votre lettre d\u2019appui pourrait consister \u00e0 traiter du \u00ab\u2009qui, quoi, o\u00f9, quand et comment\u2009\u00bb \u00e0 propos de votre r\u00f4le et votre appui au projet. Par exemple\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Qui est le chercheur principal dans le cadre de la demande?<\/li>\n<li>Quel est le titre du projet? Quel sera votre r\u00f4le dans la recherche? Que ferez-vous concr\u00e8tement dans la cadre des travaux de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche?<\/li>\n<li>O\u00f9 se d\u00e9roulera la recherche ou dans quel contexte se d\u00e9roulera-t-elle? Par exemple, il pourrait s\u2019agir de rencontres virtuelles, de rencontres en personne ou un m\u00e9lange des deux.<\/li>\n<li>Quand la recherche sera-t-elle effectu\u00e9e ou quel en est l\u2019\u00e9ch\u00e9ancier? Mentionner la dur\u00e9e du projet de recherche montre que vous \u00eates bien au fait de ce dernier.<\/li>\n<li>Comment votre exp\u00e9rience et vos comp\u00e9tences cadrent-elles avec le projet, ses objectifs et les r\u00e9sultats pr\u00e9vus? N\u2019oubliez pas que vous n\u2019avez qu\u2019\u00e0 faire part de ce que vous \u00eates \u00e0 l\u2019aise de communiquer. De plus, comment les r\u00e9sultats pr\u00e9vus contribueront-ils globalement \u00e0 l\u2019enrichissement des connaissances, \u00e0 la production de r\u00e9sultats pour les patients, etc.?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vous pouvez choisir de conclure votre lettre en souhaitant au chercheur de conna\u00eetre du succ\u00e8s dans sa demande, tout en exprimant votre int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 conna\u00eetre les r\u00e9sultats du concours.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><u>Le suivi<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Habituellement, il s\u2019\u00e9coule quelques mois entre la pr\u00e9sentation de la demande de subvention et le d\u00e9voilement des r\u00e9sultats du concours. Si l\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche n\u2019offre pas de le faire, il est tout \u00e0 fait acceptable de lui demander, en remettant votre lettre d\u2019appui, quand vous pouvez vous attendre \u00e0 conna\u00eetre les r\u00e9sultats du concours.<\/p>\n<p>Les \u00e9quipes de recherche oublient parfois d\u2019informer les personnes qui ont r\u00e9dig\u00e9 des lettres d\u2019appui du r\u00e9sultat du concours de financement. Cela ne fait pas tr\u00e8s bonne impression, mais c\u2019est parfois la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Si c\u2019est le cas, n\u2019h\u00e9sitez pas \u00e0 poser des questions sur les r\u00e9sultats du concours.<\/p>\n<p>Nous vous souhaitons de conna\u00eetre du succ\u00e8s dans la r\u00e9daction de vos lettres d\u2019appui!
