\nI\u2019ve been putting off
\nfor weeks<\/p>\n

I pulled up and it started raining
\n\u2013\u2013 so I\u2019m sitting in my car
\nhoping it will pass<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve started reading
\nabout pollinators, pollinizers, pollination
\nsyndromes, sonication, convergent evolution<\/p>\n

\u2026 because I can\u2019t peer into the bushes
\nand wonder<\/p>\n

what goes on in there?<\/p>\n

eavesdrop
\non conversations:
\nmutualism, neonicotinoids
\nbrain, navigation, colonies, pollution
\nmobility, feeding, foraging,
\nactivity, behavior, memory,
\nlearning, invasive \u2026<\/p>\n

apparently, there\u2019s a document:
\n\u201cThe Economic Challenge
\nPosed by Declining Pollinator
\nPopulations\u201d<\/p>\n

economic challenge?<\/p>\n

as though hordes of beings
\nwandering around
\nlosing their minds, unable
\nto go home<\/p>\n

form healthy relationships
\nfeed and clothe themselves
\ntake care of their young<\/p>\n

their brains addled by chemicals<\/p>\n

as though we would do differently
\nif it were people, instead of bees?<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have the time, the resources to \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\nthis isn\u2019t some lecture, guilt trip
\nor call to action<\/p>\n

we\u2019re tired, busy, stressed out
\ntrying to make it through
\none day and the next<\/p>\n

can\u2019t live up to what we think
\nwe should be, or think
\nwe\u2019re supposed to be<\/p>\n

maybe it is cynical, negative
\n\u2026 but sometimes I wonder
\nif the disease and decline is in<\/p>\n

our society
\nand the bees, the bees
\nonly reflect that<\/p>\n

this isn\u2019t a dirty look
\ncause you\u2019re using plastic grocery bags<\/p>\n

the average working person:
\ntrying to raise a family, be a good person
\nand make enough money to get by<\/p>\n

the average person:
\nwants something good<\/p>\n

community, environment
\nthis site, so beautiful, really<\/p>\n

surrounded by parking lots
\nand concrete blocks
\na field half gravel, half plants
\n(whose names I don\u2019t know)<\/p>\n

here, salvageable
\nsurrounded by stress<\/p>\n

the oppressive
\nnature of capitalism
\nmaterialism<\/p>\n

\na home, a sanctuary
\n\u2026 a shady place of rest<\/p>\n

my hour has come
\nto an end<\/p>\n

and I\u2019m still sitting in the parking lot<\/p>\n

all the rushing around this morning
\nthe school work and reading
\npiling up, the rain and the way<\/p>\n

my pants don\u2019t fit
\nbecause I\u2019ve been eating too much crap
\nand drinking too much wine. The stupid
\nemails I sent people last week,<\/p>\n

that thing I said to someone that
\nmight be misinterpreted<\/p>\n

\u2026 the fact that my apartment is a mess
\nand my clothes all live on the floor
\n(the floor that needs vacuumed)<\/p>\n

my hour here has come to an end
\n\u2026 but it has stopped raining<\/p>\n

before I leave, I\u2019m going to walk
\ninto this site and take a breather<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to tend to that place
\nof beauty and rest<\/p>\n

the spaces of sanctuary in my own life<\/p>\n
