Regulations?

Since insects have not been considered as regular food sources in North America for a very long time, there is a very large grey area around the regulations in their consumption for humans and animals (FAO.org).

Projects oriented around insect husbandry have been emerging in small scales such as the Tiny Farms project out of Silicon Valley. But with demand so low because of an extremely niche market, policy makers and lobbyists have been slowly gaining interest in this practice.

Currently in Canada, insect feed for animals has not even been acknowledged in the Novel Feeds derived from animals policy by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.  Companies like Enterra and OfBug from Vancouver, are not yet fully authorized to sell their soldier fly larvae feed to fish farmers or chicken farmers, even though they have been practically proven completely safe for non-ruminant animal consumption.
