{"id":73,"date":"2017-07-08T10:56:19","date_gmt":"2017-07-08T17:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/intuitiveinquiry\/?page_id=73"},"modified":"2017-07-25T06:37:44","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T13:37:44","slug":"quare-intuitive-teaching-and-learning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/intuitiveinquiry\/quare-intuitive-teaching-and-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Intuitive Teaching and Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Teaching and learning from the Inside Out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As an educator at the university level, I have always thought &#8211; and been taught by others &#8211; that if\u00a0<strong><em>what<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>I do is innovative, creative, in-tune with students&#8217; interests and capacities, I will be successful at what I do. \u00a0I was also told that <em><strong>what<\/strong> <\/em>I study would define me for at least the first ten years of my career and that if <em><strong>what\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>I study is exciting, relevant for the times, and &#8220;cutting edge,&#8221; I will inspire others to follow the same path; to study the same crucial topics.<\/p>\n<p>I clearly remember going to the job market to find my first university position and thinking and actually believing that I <em><strong>was<\/strong><\/em> what I do. \u00a0I, Brianne Orr, \u00a0bi-lingual American from a small town in Michigan, Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies and lover of all things related to Spanish and Spanish-American culture, <strong><em>was<\/em><\/strong> Revolution. \u00a0After all, that was\u00a0my primary area of specialization\u00a0and therefore\u00a0that was\u00a0who I was or at least the defining characteristic in who I would become as an educator, a peer, and a mentor for others in the years to come.<\/p>\n<p>For the first few years of my career, I allowed\u00a0<strong><em>what<\/em> <\/strong>I do to define my perception of who I am as an educator. \u00a0I believed that students took my classes because they were interested in what I taught &#8211; Revolution, Identity, Translation, Language. \u00a0While this could be true, at least in part, about a year ago, my brother sent me a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action\">Simon Sinek TED talk<\/a> that has re-shaped how I view myself and my role as an educator at the university level.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">It&#8217;s not about\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>you do, it&#8217;s about\u00a0<em>why<\/em> you do it.
