{"id":3,"date":"2009-09-28T12:39:03","date_gmt":"2009-09-28T20:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/isltopics\/?p=3"},"modified":"2010-01-08T15:42:57","modified_gmt":"2010-01-08T23:42:57","slug":"week-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/isltopics\/2009\/09\/28\/week-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Week 1 (Jan 6<sup>th<\/sup>) \u2013 Introduction to Course, Students, Topic and Definition of ISL<\/h2>\n<h3>Objective:<\/h3>\n<p>By the end of the session, students will be able to understand how the seminar is structured and marked. \u00a0From the keynote speaker, students will gain an interest in and a broad overview the topics and issues in International Service-Learning that will be pursued throughout the term.\u00a0 Further, through discussions of readings, students will be expected to define service-learning, and understand its distinction from other community engagements.<\/p>\n<h3>Bridge:<\/h3>\n<p>The terms in the syllabus (marking, assignments, respectful discussion) that are agreed to in this class will be adhered to throughout the rest of the course.<\/p>\n<h3>Engaging the Group:<\/h3>\n<p>Activities (in order of how they will be carried out):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facilitator: Self-introductions, including interest in class and experience in development issues. (20 min).\u00a0 Explain roles of facilitators.<\/li>\n<li>Facilitator: Go over the syllabus as a group. (30 min)<\/li>\n<li>Feature Presentation by Dr. Shafik Dharamsi on ethics, sustainability and intercultural sensitivity, specifically on ISL (45min, 10 min Q&amp;A)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cService-Learning: A Balanced Approach\u201d class discussion (20min)\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss homework: what did each student find unexpected about definition of service-learning? What is one question that you had while reading this article?<\/li>\n<li>Break (10 min)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTheoretical Foundations of International Service-Learning\u201d (45min)\n<ul>\n<li>Each student assigned to one part of the paper and read<\/li>\n<li>Each student will then summarize and present his\/her part, followed by discussion moderated by facilitator.<\/li>\n<li>Start discussion on grading rubric if there is time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Resources needed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10 copies of the Syllabus with the marking scheme<\/li>\n<li>Projector (check room)<\/li>\n<li>10 copies of \u201cService-Learning: A Balanced Approach\u201d and \u201cTheoretical Foundations of International Service-Learning.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Assign journaling assignment: compare and contrast your definition of service-learning before and after the class.\u00a0 Has it changed? Can you now identify characteristics of service-learning?
