Health Fair Project- Outreach Oral Cancer Screening
Oral Cancer Screening
From previous researches and education on the oral pathology topic, I have a brief understanding on the variety of oral lesions, oral cancer screenings and cancer early detections. As a future health professional, I wished to acquire a deeper knowledge on oral cancer detection, as well as acquire the skills to help clients manage it. Although I have learnt about the basic concepts of oral pathology and oral cancer throughout my academic education, I have not been fully and extensively exposed with direct care of oral cancer or pre-cancer lesion clients. Therefore, I volunteered in this event: oral cancer screening.
This event showcased my growth in utilizing VELscope and thorough Intra and Extra oral examination for oral cancer detection. It is also very valuable to me to understand many people do not have access to oral cancer screening, especially among those less dental literate population.
Early detection of the cancerous lesion is a paramount intervention that can reduce disease progression and improve chances of survival. Through this event I realized the unmet needs of the population and the importance of increasing access to oral cancer screening.
As a dental hygienist, I will provide cancer screening to every client that walks in my clinic. I will also participate in initiatives that help improving the access and promoting oral cancer screening.
This event offered me knowledge, skills, and experience to become more competent in oral cancer screening.
