{"id":304,"date":"2012-06-12T11:27:53","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T18:27:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/?p=304"},"modified":"2012-06-16T10:31:09","modified_gmt":"2012-06-16T17:31:09","slug":"cultivating-the-real-and-e-maginary-self","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/2012\/06\/12\/cultivating-the-real-and-e-maginary-self\/","title":{"rendered":"Cultivating the Real and E-maginary Self"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/files\/2012\/06\/3974055-39812-despair-or-hope-computer-keys-showing-hopeful-or-hopeless1.jpeg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/files\/2012\/06\/3974055-39812-despair-or-hope-computer-keys-showing-hopeful-or-hopeless2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-309 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/files\/2012\/06\/3974055-39812-despair-or-hope-computer-keys-showing-hopeful-or-hopeless2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/files\/2012\/06\/3974055-39812-despair-or-hope-computer-keys-showing-hopeful-or-hopeless2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/files\/2012\/06\/3974055-39812-despair-or-hope-computer-keys-showing-hopeful-or-hopeless2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ivefs2012\/files\/2012\/06\/3974055-39812-despair-or-hope-computer-keys-showing-hopeful-or-hopeless2.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>During my time in MPNH\u2019s computer classes, I have been trying to understand what purpose learning basic computer skills serves for the immigrant women who participate.\u00a0 After spending five weeks with the women in both classes, I have seen that motivations for learning computer skills vary.\u00a0\u00a0 Many participants want to be able to communicate with friends and family living outside Vancouver, some feel they need to \u2018keep up\u2019 as the world becomes increasingly dependent on ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies), and others want access to information online such as job postings, world news, or bus schedules.\u00a0 However, I was unclear as to how these women\u2019s individual motivations to gain skills and subsequent uses of computers connected to the theoretical issues of immigration that we had been discussing in class.<\/p>\n<p>I found the connection I was looking for in our reading of Arjun Appadurai who suggests that cyberspace often serves as a \u201cmeans of providing a sense of aspiration and hope to\u2026migrant populations\u201d (Pyati &amp; Srinivasan, 2007, p 1734).\u00a0 This statement holds relevance for my observation and conversations with A, an older South Asian woman who attended computer classes.\u00a0 A told me that she gets depressed and stressed out, and that she was in the class because her doctor suggested that she try something new (presumably to help with her depression).\u00a0 A said she was glad that she made an effort to come to class, even though it was hard for her and some days she didn\u2019t want to. \u00a0She now feels more confident using computers, and particularly proud of her new ability to use email.\u00a0 A added that she was excited to email her son a copy of her Power Point presentation that she had done as her final class project.\u00a0 Thus for A, learning to communicate with others online provided her with a sense of confidence in her abilities to learn new things and helped alleviate some of her anxiety and negative feelings (at least temporarily).<\/p>\n<p>Not only do online \u2018worlds\u2019 provide a space of hope and aspiration for immigrants, according to Appadurai, \u201c[all] electronic media provide resources for self-imagining as an everyday social project\u201d (1996, p 4).\u00a0 I witnessed a form of this \u2018self-imagining\u2019 in another participant\u2019s presentation of her Power Point project.\u00a0 In her slideshow, P showed pictures that she had found online of what she called \u2018the house of my dreams.\u2019\u00a0 P explained how she wants to have a fancy house with big windows that look onto a lush garden.\u00a0 A particular image showed a smiling family in formal attire standing on the front steps of a grand house, with the mother wearing a white ball gown.\u00a0 P said she imagines this is her family in front of their house.\u00a0 When each of her daughters turn fifteen, she dreams of them wearing beautiful dresses like the one in the photo for their <em>quinceaneras<\/em> (a Mexican coming of age ceremony for girls).\u00a0 P further described how she wanted to have big fancy parties for each <em>quinceanera<\/em>, and how her girls would look like princesses and how happy that would make her.<\/p>\n<p>As a recent immigrant from Mexico, with little English skills and 4 young children to care for on her partner\u2019s low-income, P\u2019s life in Canada has been challenging.\u00a0 Through her use of Power Point and web-sourced images P played with ideas that were at once fantasies but also real, powerful imaginings for her future.
