You are invited to submit an academic paper proposal or a creative writing submission that contributes to the existing body of literature and research in the area of children\u2019s and young adult literature studies, which includes novels, films, apps, and picturebooks, as well as other culturally produced modes of children\u2019s literature. We are particularly interested in research and creative pieces that draw upon broadly interpreted themes of identity, which can include liminality, hybridity, Otherness or Othering, gender, and transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Topics may include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identity as a critical lens for reading children\u2019s and young adult literature<\/li>\n<li>The child or young adult choosing or combining identities<\/li>\n<li>Issues of hybridity: hybridity of genre, multimodality, cultural identity, racial identity, sexual identity<\/li>\n<li>How &#8216;otherness&#8217; shapes identity in materials for children and youth<\/li>\n<li>Negotiation of self and Other as represented in cultural texts<\/li>\n<li>Liminality and other states of \u2018being in between\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous identities<\/li>\n<li>National identities<\/li>\n<li>Boundaries, their creation and transgression<\/li>\n<li>Multiple, cross-cultural, and\/or transnational identities<\/li>\n<li>The role of identity in constructing literature and literacies<\/li>\n<li>Reconstructive identity and multiple selves<\/li>\n<li>Imagined identities: dreams, fantasy and desire<\/li>\n<li>The cultural markers of childhood and adolescence<\/li>\n<li>Identity and performativity: a gendered discourse<\/li>\n<li>Fluid subjectivities; multiplicity\u00a0of selves<\/li>\n<li>The pedagogical implications of identity in various stages of literacy<\/li>\n<li>Virtual selves in virtual worlds<\/li>\n<li>The \u2018coming of age\u2019 trope in 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century literature<\/li>\n<li>Neoliberal capitalism and the individualistic \u2018I\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Identity embodied: mixed abilities represented in YA and children\u2019s literature<\/li>\n<li>Marginalised identities represented in works of fiction for youth<\/li>\n<li>Eco-critical understandings of subjectivity<\/li>\n<li>Interwoven subjectivities and the individualistic \u2018I\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Academic papers<\/strong> on any children\u2019s or young adult genres are welcome,\u00a0as are papers that discuss other children\u2019s texts such as film, virtual texts, or graphic novels.\u00a0 The topics above are a guideline for the proposals we would like to see, but we are eager to receive and review paper proposals on any topic related to children\u2019s and young adult texts.<\/p>\n<p>Please send a 250 word abstract that includes the title of your paper, a list of references in MLA format, a 50-word biography, your name, your university affiliation, email address, and phone number\u00a0to\u00a0the review committee at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:submit.ubc.gradcon@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\"><b>submit.ubc.gradcon@gmail.com<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0Please include \u201cConference Proposal\u201d in the subject line of your email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative writing<\/strong> for children and young adults in any genre is welcome, including prose, poetry, picture books and graphic novels. The topics above are a guideline for the proposals we would like to see, but we are eager to receive and review submissions on any topic.<\/p>\n<p>Please send a piece of work no longer than 12 pages double spaced, anything shorter is welcome (poetry, for example, might only be a page). A chapter, a short story, a poem (a set of poems), a picturebook manuscript, a play script, anything is welcome!
