This is a paper that I wrote in the winter of 2016 for my GEOG 352 research assignment, for which we had to select a city in the Global South, and craft a report on its development within the last century. “The Path to Prosperity: Singapore’s Development in an Increasingly Globalized World” is an exploration of Singapore as a case study of a nation in the Global South that has managed to travel in an upward trajectory, in contrast to the many that have done the complete opposite. In the paper I discuss the reasons for Singapore’s unparalleled success, largely attributed to its geography and strategic movements in the global economy.
This was the first 300-level course I had taken, and it proved to be most challenging, yet thought-provoking and inspiring courses I had experienced. Writing this paper allowed me to deeply investigate a subject within my field of interest, yet from the perspective of success instead of the expected reflection on poverty. It taught me the importance of considering all the angles of a phenomena, and to question the causes of both sides of the scale. I hope that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed learning about it.
