Hello,
My passport says my name is Jaewook Lee, but I prefer to go by “Will”; naturally, it’s short for Jaewook.
I am currently in the Geographical Sciences program at the University of British Columbia. After years of nervous deliberation, I decided to choose this path for my education because the learning goals expressed by that particular vein of geography genuinely piqued my interest. Studying matters of the environment and sustainability allow me to explore both the technical and the sociological implications of human life on earth.
To be completely honest, I am not interested in a career in the Geographical Sciences. I love people. I know that I want to work in a field that requires me to interact with people, perhaps even on a psychological level. By no means does this allow me to assume that my current studies are irrelevant. Actually, through my studies in geography I have discovered more about people on a macro-level than I have in elective Psychology courses. Matters of sustainability and environmentalism boil down to motivations. There is a constant tension between consumption and restraint. I think this tension transcends environmentalism and hint at the kind of questions that I want to be addressing for the rest of my life: what tensions must we navigate as individuals and as a whole?
