Biography

My Name is Jacob Bauer and I am an aspiring Professional Geo-Scientist. I am a 3rd year Geogrphical Biogeoscience Student in the faculty of science. Most of my studies are centered around hydrology, geology and chemistry. My education will set me up for a job in environmental consultancy, or resource management. This combines two of my passions, the outdoors and science. I spend much of my time in the mountains, throughout the summer and winter. In the winter I am and avid snowboarder, mostly off the resort. I developed this passion through living in Whistler BC for 5 years, where I spent much of my time gaining mountaineering skills. These include: climbing, avalanche safety, natural hazard mitigation and navigation. I have already had opportunities to apply these skills professionally in my summer job as a forestry fire fighter.

I have been a member of coastal fire center for 4 seasons, and have traveled much of BC in my job. I have been on some the largest fires that BC has seen, since it began fire management. Fire fighting provides a fast paced, fun and exciting work environment, where team work is crucial.  Without trust and communication in my coworkers, our workplace would quickly descend to chaos, drastically increasing the hazards to us all. I have developed new abilities to communicate professionally in a field work environment.

I believe these abilities, along with my education, will set me up for a fulfilling career. I would like to use my back-country and analytical skills to assist in understanding the world. I am particularly interested in snowpack hydrology and how that is being effected by climate change. This is important because all of coastal BC relies on snow melt, from our granite mountains, for our source of water.
