Course Description:

Information technology is a course designed for students to be introduced to basic skills in computer processing, photo manipulation, modeling and animation, computer programming, web design, and multimedia creation.  Students will develop a basic understanding of the different core focus areas, with the intention of pursuing one of the areas in a future senior level course.  In addition, students will be able to develop problem solving, design, collaboration and critical thinking skills as they apply their skills to real world scenarios.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Students will apply basic object-oriented programming skills to designing simple games by using block-based programming tools.
  2. Students will use online tools to collaborate in real time while working on various course projects.
  3. Students will evaluate the effects and ethics of photo manipulation in media on consumers, while developing basic editing skills.
  4. Students will utilize the design process in creating 3D models and simple animations.
  5. Students will critique the layouts of various websites and apply this learning to creating their own website.

Units of Study:

  1. Making Games – Students will utilize the Drag-and-Drop programming language Scratch in order to create small online games and animations.
  2. Making Photos – Students will work with photo editing and manipulation software, such as Photoshop, to create their own unique and interesting images.
  3. Making Models – Students will use the open source program, Blender, to design their own 3D models and create small animations.
  4. Making Websites – Students will learn basic web programming languages, while working to create their own website
  5. Tools for Business – Students will utilize the online platform, Microsoft Office 365, and the desktop Microsoft Office Suite to collaborate and create different resources that would be used in a business environment.

Assessment:

This course is designed to utilize a project-based learning strategy.  Each unit of study will have two or three main projects that students will be required to complete in addition to smaller learning tasks, quizzes and discussions.  As such, projects will carry the heaviest weighting for the student’s overall grade.  Students are expected to also maintain a digital portfolio of their various assignments so that they can showcase their learning and projects.  It is recommended that students use either the Edublog or WordPress platform for creating their digital portfolio.  If students have a strong desire to use a different platform, it must first be approved by Mr. Jamieson.  Students are expected to update their portfolio on a regular basis and the portfolios will be assessed at the end of the course.

            Completed Projects – 70%

            Introductory Assignments – 15%

            Participation in online discussions and creation of digital portfolio – 15%

Students will utilize Edmodo to be able to submit their course assignments.  You can sign up for Edmodo by following the steps on the link here.  Students will need to hand-in their assignments through the respective folders on Edmodo.

Communication:

This course is designed to utilize multiple strategies for communication and discussions.  We will attempt to use the commenting feature built into WordPress to be able to generate online class discussions.  Students are also able to engage in discussions through the Edmodo platform.  Edmodo will be used to supplement the course which is predominantly accessed through WordPress.  In addition, if at any time you need to speak with Mr. Jamieson outside of the class, he can be reached by email.
