Jane Austen (from pemberley.com)

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775, the seventh child and second daughter. Her father, George Austen, was a reverend.

Four of Austen’s novels were published in her lifetime: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1815). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published posthumously in 1818.

Austen’s works did not achieve popularity during her lifetime. It was only until the publication of her biography A Memoir of Jane Austen by her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh in 1869 that the public started taking an interest in her books. With that, it was only until the 20th and 21st century that Jane Austen achieved great success, with her works being taught in schools.

Numerous adaptations have been made of Jane Austen’s works recently, including movies, graphic novels, spin-offs, and TV series. These include the 2005 movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightly, the movie Clueless which is a modern reimagining of Emma, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a re-writing which includes “swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses”,which has since been adapted into a movie.
