It’s against the law to not pay for a transit ticket if you are using the transit system, so why do some bus drivers allow people on for free? A bus driver has two roles: 1) to drive the bus to the designated stops and 2) to ensure that passengers pay for their fare. I use the bus on a daily basis and I occasionally see the bus driver allowing people on for free. Some scenarios are: the bus is late and in order to get back on schedule, he/she allows everyone on for free; a person claims that he/she only has a $x bill; or a person uses the phrase “Can I get a ride home?”. Now, by giving into the people’s “claims”, it makes people think that it’s ok to not pay for a transit ticket which is incorrect. The transit system is a business that provides a service at a small fee. If every bus driver did this at least once a week, imagine the huge loss in profits. A concession fare of $1.75 or an adult fare of $2.50 may not seem like a lot, but in the long run it does stack up.
