My\u00a0aim as a teacher focuses on creating engaging and thought-provoking learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/janluedert\/files\/2015\/06\/created.by_.Aha-Soft.from_.Noun_.Project.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-115 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/janluedert\/files\/2015\/06\/created.by_.Aha-Soft.from_.Noun_.Project-150x150.png\" alt=\"created.by.Aha-Soft.from.Noun.Project\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/janluedert\/files\/2015\/06\/created.by_.Aha-Soft.from_.Noun_.Project-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/janluedert\/files\/2015\/06\/created.by_.Aha-Soft.from_.Noun_.Project-144x144.png 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>I\u00a0adhere to a philosophy of\u00a0participatory and transformative learning using a variety of teaching techniques ranging from personal reflection to group projects. I also incorporate flexible and flipped online components into my teaching including the integration of varied media, wiki\u2019s, video presentations and online learning modules.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-canvas-width=\"449.11545035823536\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nMy use of different teaching techniques tries to ensure that students are encouraged to delve into different facets of their studies, and ultimately\u00a0emerge as self-determined and critical thinkers. I\u00a0pay particular attention to specific signature pedagogies including simulations and case studies and threshold concepts relevant to the study of world politics such as authority, governance, institutions, interests, legitimacy, power, anarchy, hierarchy and sovereignty.\u00a0I endeavour to adjust my teaching as the classroom environment evolves \u00a0and to foster active and participatory learning.\u00a0<\/span>I found my teaching by drawing on six methodological teaching and learning pillars:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-canvas-width=\"650.1797736670588\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion groups\u00a0and debates that <\/span><b>connect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0students\u2019 knowledge and values to the \u2018world\u2019 of politics. This is to highlight the diversity of thought and perspectives, as well as to provide\u00a0an appreciation of world politics as a\u00a0set of diverse theories, practices and actors. By using\u00a0current and historical cases, students are equipped to apply and evaluate the explanatory power of individual theories. For example, discussion groups working through the perspectives of relevant actors in climate change negotiations, reveal a more nuanced picture for the class as a whole. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyzing, brainstorming, and writing exercises\u00a0that <\/span><b>focus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> individual student\u2019s thoughts and\u00a0opinions about novel and often dense information.\u00a0For instance, a writing exercise that asks students to formulate a definition for a central concept in their own words allows them to become more confident when encountering these concepts in the class readings. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Role-plays and simulations lets students\u00a0<\/span><b>collaborate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a team, thereby sharpening communication skills, teamwork and respect for diverse opinions. For example, modelling the United Nations Security Council through an analysis of a particular event enhances students\u2019 abilities to strategize and sustain a policy position vis-\u00e0-vis other groups. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual presentations and small group projects require students to\u00a0<\/span><b>reflect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0on their individual\u00a0learning. This helps students to assess and showcase their own\u00a0progress, motivation, and participation in an open\u00a0and free environment. For instance, students may present their research paper findings in a three-minute video or collectively produce student-generated online wikis for a particular case study. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a former practitioner of international development,\u00a0I aim to bring a <\/span><b>practical<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>ethical<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focus to my teaching; drawing on my own background to relate topics to local, regional, and global intricacies. I incorporate my\u00a0international study and work experiences, where appropriate, to highlight the importance for ethical judgement. I may provide a story of an ethical dilemma surrounding \u2018tied aid\u2019 to students or challenge students to take on the perspectives of directly affected peoples when discussing international migration or economic inequality. This helps\u00a0students to be mindful of other peoples\u2019 life experiences, while providing opportunities to evaluate their own. My emphasis is intended to transfer skills from the classroom to\u00a0everyday situations. \u00a0In order to encourage students\u2019 to consider their own agency, my teaching aims to empower\u00a0students to analyze, articulate and appreciate their own place in the world and be cognizant of how their intended profession is interconnected with global affairs. Some of the main areas of expertise I bring to the classroom expertise on issues of\u00a0Global Health (including HIV\/AIDS), environmental politics, international development, transnational politics and the mobilization of indigenous peoples in intergovernmental organizations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also believe that <\/span><b>extracurricular<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learning is a crucial part of a well-rounded education. Given my own positive\u00a0experiences, I encourage students to\u00a0apply for internships and study abroad programs,\u00a0and actively help them to prepare and apply for such opportunities. By drawing on a variety of learning techniques my aim is to connect, focus, collaborate, and reflect student\u2019s learning. By bringing a practical and ethical focus to my teaching I hope to contribute to student development in the university setting and beyond.
