Professional Development Day
On Friday I got the opportunity to attend a conference related to dyslexia. I was surprised at the amount of information I got to absorb and learn from the two speakers. Some of the things that really stood out for me were the ways in which the speakers discussed the topic of dyslexia. One of the speakers was extremely engaging in the sense that she used a more hands on approach to help us realize how difficult it is for someone with a learning disability. We were each given a short passage written in a format that was difficult to comprehend, this example alone made me feel very uncomfortable and uneasy because i was not able to understand what i was reading. Prior to this conference I knew about learning disabilities that existed but never got the opportunity apply them or be able to experience life through their view point. Going forward, I can use the knowledge that I gained and apply it within my own classroom and my practicum this year. One of the students in my practicum has a learning disability and I have noticed how difficult it is for him to complete simple tasks such as reading. After being put in a similar position during the conference I feel that I’am more equipped to handle various situations that I may encounter in the future. Overall, an awesome experience that allowed us to work, learn, and meet with other educators in the schooling system.
