A Learning Experience
As a teacher candidate, my biggest fear is not being able to manage a classroom environment and behavior; therefore, I’m always trying to find new ways to become more comfortable with this. My fear of classroom management and disruptive student behavior led me to various resources that could help me overcome this. I found an article “Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers” by Carolyn Evertson that offers techniques to prevent poor classroom management by planning and addressing decisions that a teacher makes on a daily basis. This article also mentioned that the teacher can work on arranging the physical space, choose rules and procedures that fit better, plan and conduct instruction, maintain appropriate behavior using good communication skills, and managing groups of students. As my observations continue and become more specific to my inquiry, I’m going to try to utilize this newly gained knowledge into my future lesson plans. Through my observations, I have been able to recognize the importance for all educators to effectively utilize various techniques within a classroom. Some physical environments may be more effective for one class but may not work for another, and that is the beauty of it! Each classroom may require a varied degree of attention, assistance or management. As a new teacher, I know that I will struggle grasping many of the concepts but over time as my teaching career continues I will be able to incorporate more strategies effectively without affecting the over classroom management.

The link between teacher preparedness, physical space and classroom management is well documented Jasleen. I’m glad you uncovered some information that is of value to your inquiry and practicum planning. I look forward to hearing more specifically how you think you will go about improving the climate (and maintaining classroom behaviour) moving forward!
