What constraints exist?
In the article “Principal Perception on Classroom Physical Environment” by Ramli Hidayahtuljamilah, a differed perspective is brought into question. It talks about the decision of arranging a classroom and how it should be based on many things such as the teacher role and pedagogy used in learning subjects, how the classroom is managed, the existing space, and the learning activities in the classroom. Although teachers may try to rearrange their classrooms to better suit the needs of the students, the teacher still needs to consider that that there may be constraints which limit the flexibility of the classroom. It included various constraints which may be limiting such as types of furnishings, space in a classroom, and the district education policy. My initial thoughts were that I can go into a classroom environment and alter the seating plan and organize the class in a way that I felt better suited the needs of my students. However, after reading this article I have realized that I have to keep many different factors in mind such as limitations that the school board puts on the school, and the space available. Through my classroom observations, I have noticed that these limitations definitely have an impact on the ways in which teachers organize and structure their classroom. This article will be useful in my inquiry project because it shows that although the physical environment is fundamental in learning, sometimes there may be constraints which limit the teacher’s capabilities in rearranging his/her classroom. This article will also be a great resource to refer back to in my future practice!
