Data Collection & Organization

The datasets that I required for both components (MCE analysis & least-cost path) of the GIS analysis portion of my project, are listed and cited as follows:

    • Dissemination Areas:  Dissemination Area Boundary File, 2016 Census. 2016. Statistics Canada Catalogue no. 92-169-X
    • Land Use Classifications: 2011 Generalized Land Use Classification. 2011. Metro Vancouver Open Data Catalogue. Retrieved from http://www.metrovancouver.org/data.
    • Roads: DMTI CanMap Route Logistics, 2014 – Accessed from the G Drive
    • Population Density: Statistics Canada. 2016. British Columbia  and Canada. Census Profile. 2016 Census. Statistics Canada Catalogue no. 98-316-X2016001. Ottawa. Released November 29, 2017 – Accessed from CHASS Data Centre
    • City of Surrey Boundary: Surrey City Boundary, 2016. City of Surrey Open Data Catalogue. Retrieved from https://data.surrey. ca/dataset/surrey-city-boundary
    • Metro Vancouver Boundaries: Municipal Boundaries, 2017. Metro Vancouver Open Data Catalogue. Retrieved from http://www.metrovancouver.org/data

In order to use these datasets, I did have to organize them and prepare them for use. Specifically I:

    • Clipped the DA’s to Surrey and Metro Vancouver (separately) by using the select by attribute tool  and the clipping tool.
    • Projected the DA’s to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N from PCS Lambert Conformal Conic.
    • Clipped the land use data to Surrey and Metro Vancouver (separately) by using the select by attribute tool  and the clipping tool.
    • Clipped the road data to the City of Surrey Boundary and the Metro Vancouver Boundaries using the clipping tool.
    • Joined the population density excel data to the Surrey dissemination areas (newly projected and clipped) layer using the joins and relates tool.
