With Surrey’s growing population, it is likely that the demand for transit will increase. Given the large university-aged population of Surrey, it is concerning that there is not a bus route that travels directly from Surrey to UBC. As a past commuter myself I am well aware of the long wait times, multiple transfers, and the no shows that I would often face to travel to school. There was a private shuttle service created to eliminate these issues, however it was shutdown in the past year and thus I set out to create my own least-cost path from Surrey to UBC. To do this, I started by conducting research on the nuances of the transit system, after which I used a multi-criteria analysis with factors of population density and land use and isochrone maps to identify the ideal location for a bus terminal in Surrey. To finish, I assigned costs to different land uses and used the cost path tool to generate a least-cost path. I found that the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey was most ideal for a bus terminal, particularly the location at 8567 120th Street. The least-cost path I generated ended up spanning 37 km from Surrey through New Westminister and through many of the eastern and western neighborhoods of Vancouver.
