Dependent Freedom

Apple Paymobile payment

Hype is building up for the new iPhone 6 with its fresh looks, advancements in camera performance, and increased efficiency; however, one of the main features included with the new phone that has the potential to be a very controversial topic is a revolutionary technology called “Apple Pay.” The basic concept of Apple Pay is that one is able to have one’s credit card stored on their phone so that everything is in one place. Although Apple Pay promotes many security features, such as the fingerprint touch ID technology, having a one-time security code for each payment, not allowing the cashier to see one’s name, credit card number, or security code, and the Find my iPhone application that allows one to discontinue payments from the phone without having to cancel one’s card, many people are still skeptical about what seems to be a huge “leap” into the future. Apple Pay could be the “catalyst that finally turns consumers on to mobile payments”, but on the other hand, the wall that Apple needs to overcome, pushing people over to mobile payments, is standing tall, as the public realizes that “anything that can be encrypted can be decrypted” and that their freedom is dependant on many factors out of their control.

Personally, I think that the concept of Apple Pay will improve our standard of living, as it is efficient and could possibly lower the rate of in-store credit card theft; however, with major retail stores such as Walmart, Amazon.com, and Target not wanting to affiliate themselves with this technology, only time will tell whether or not Apple Pay possesses the “activation energy” to start the reaction of a new era in technology.
