Our World Needs More Wave-Makers
We have all watched futuristic movies that depict advanced infrastructure, teleportation machines, and flying cars. Since I was a kid, I have always wanted to see what the “future” would look like, wondering if I would still be alive to see our society reach this stage. Seeing all these innovations and advancements in technology
, I now realize that our world is inevitably, without a doubt, moving forward, at a pace faster than I could have ever imagined. Our world’s continuous transformation is all thanks to people called intrapreneurs—people who make waves, or “[changes that begin] with a person’s decision to act, [rippling] outward like those patterns in the ocean.” These wave-makers “spot a need or opportunity and decide to initiate a change” through sparking innovation, driving performance, accelerating professional development, and most importantly, shaking up the status quo.
Whenever I see an innovation like Peter Treadway’s Acton Rocket Skates, I get excited as this is one step closer to my so called vision of the “future.” Treadway is definitely a wave-maker, as he shakes up the status quo of our society’s public transportation, claiming that their product is “the world’s first smart wearable transportation.” This innovation has great potential, being an alternative to scooters, skateboards, and walking, making it easier for UBC students to get around campus. Treadway should be highly respected for taking this big risk, and I hope that the wave he made would generate tsunamis.
