Today in class we discussed teacher professionalism. Many of us had questions about what that looks like in terms of social media. It was discussed that it could be necessary to create a professional Facebook account as your on-line teacher presence and to then use another account under a different name for family and friends. I think that having a second account would be a liability because sooner or later a student will find you. Managing all of your social media accounts as if a student will find it (or your grandmother) is a good approach to the matter. I know for myself, I am constantly aware of my on-line presence and who could be watching what I post. You may find some silly pictures of me when I was a fifteen year old with dreadlocks (that is not a challenge), but even then, it just seemed to risky to publish pictures on Facebook that are not in good taste. The discussion was a good one, and very pertinent to teachers now a days.
