Remember what we said in class about how to read a poem closely. First, read the poem once for gist. On the second reading, look up all words or references that you don’t know. Write out what you find in your commonplace book. You may have to look up mythological or historical allusions as well as definitions of words.
Make note of the kind of poem and its formal features. Write out your thoughts about form—how the poem works—and meaning—what the poem means. Don’t worry about being wrong. Write out thoughts, observations and questions every time you read a poem for class and bring your notes made in your commonplace book to class to share with others.
