{"id":79,"date":"2011-04-05T05:41:15","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T13:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/jerrychung\/?p=79"},"modified":"2011-04-05T05:41:15","modified_gmt":"2011-04-05T13:41:15","slug":"combating-google-docs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/jerrychung\/2011\/04\/05\/combating-google-docs\/","title":{"rendered":"Combating Google Docs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google Docs was the first online web office suite available in the internet.\u00a0 It was released in 2005 and the spreadsheet function was also released the next year.\u00a0 However, Google Docs isn&#8217;t the only web app out there that serves this function now.\u00a0 Recently, my friends who use hotmail started to use SkyDrive to share word documents with me.\u00a0 I was surprised that there was another company that would want to compete with the initial Google Docs. \u00a0Skydrive was just developed last year in June and it utilizes the Microsoft Office suite including powerpoint. \u00a0One big limitation to Skydrive is that the user must register a Hotmail account.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/login.live.com\/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&amp;rpsnv=11&amp;ct=1301321348&amp;rver=6.1.6206.0&amp;wp=MBI&amp;wreply=http:%2F%2Fskydrive.live.com%2Fhome.aspx&amp;lc=1033&amp;id=250206&amp;cbcxt=sky\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-83\" title=\"Skydrive\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/jerrychung\/files\/2011\/03\/4768333374_7cbbea7c4e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"66\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">VS<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/accounts\/ServiceLogin?service=writely&amp;passive=1209600&amp;continue=http:\/\/docs.google.com\/&amp;followup=http:\/\/docs.google.com\/&amp;ltmpl=homepage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85\" title=\"google-docs\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/jerrychung\/files\/2011\/03\/google-docs1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t find Skydrive using any promotional strategies at all. \u00a0I tried searching on Youtube for any commercials about it but the term &#8220;Skydrive&#8221; is already used for many other things that make it hard to look for. \u00a0I also don&#8217;t see any direct marketing such as emails, commercials, telemarketing etc. \u00a0Possibly Skydrive is a free app to use on the internet so they don&#8217;t spend that much resources into promoting it. \u00a0But I think for it to become successful, they have to make people who are currently using Google docs be aware of the fact that there is an alternative! \u00a0However they did create this kind of infomercial back in 2010 about how to use Skydrive.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RYGWYVQ_urY&amp;feature=pyv&amp;ad=9077599786&amp;kw=microsoft%20SkyDrive[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>I guess there is much personal selling in Skydrive. \u00a0Since Skydrive offers the ability for users to manipulate their own documents that is linked to their own Hotmail account, I suppose this is more of a personal selling. \u00a0Users are able to manage their own documents and create the personal documents which I think is selling on a more personal level. \u00a0However, Google Docs offer the same functions. \u00a0In all, would you use Skydrive?
