English 301, Technical Writing, is a course that improves the student’s ability to communicate professionally in written and online contexts. Abstracts, proposals, applications, reports, emails, texts, and networking are examples of writing pieces studied. The intended audience is students of all disciplines. This course allows the student to work independently and collaboratively with other writers. English 301 aims to refine business writing techniques, analyze and review other’s work, and prepare for career searching.
Technical Writing is divided into four units of study. The first unit allows the student to become acquainted with the instructor and classmates. Writing teams are developed and an online site is created. This unit clarifies the ideas of audience, tone, clarity, presentation, and business correspondence.
The second unit prepares the student for the formal report. Proposals and memos are addressed in this section. Social networking will be introduced through the creation of a Linked-In profile and online resume.
Next, the third unit will allow the student to draft the formal report, receive and give feedback to classmates, and make revisions. UBC’s Career Services site will be used to develop a full job application package. Or, the student can apply to a volunteer position or graduate school as an alternative.
Lastly, unit four involves the final formal report submission. Organization, evidence, audience, and style are editing areas that are focused on. The social networking assignment and career application assignment are polished up prior to final submission as well.
Practice and reflection pieces assist in developing writing skills throughout the course to prepare for the main assignments discussed above.
Personally, I look forward to this course, as I believe it will strengthen my communication techniques for further courses, job searching, and at the workplace in general. As a dental hygienist, it is important for me to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with my clients and coworkers. Additionally, as I am a new graduate, I am currently searching for a stable career. The social networking assignment and resume building will strengthen my applications I provide to potential employers. I would like to be able to make my applications stand out from other candidates. I am hoping this course will be able to provide me with knowledge and abilities to do so.
