A technology related event that stands out the most to me in my teaching career happened this year. I have been using technology throughout my teaching career, but I have never seen it really change someone’s outlook on school. This year I am teaching alternate curriculum to a student with severe learning disorders in reading, writing and math. When I came to the school this September, it seemed that a lot of people had him written off, however when I talked to him, all I could think about was how smart he seemed. I set him up with assistive technology and provided him with various software that he could use for English and Math. Within a couple weeks he was excelling and really enjoying being in school because the technology eliminated a lot of his stresses and frustrations that he had with schoolwork. By the end of this school year, I believe he will be miles ahead of his grade level. Witnessing this made me wonder how many students are getting looked over. And if we could provide students with these technologies earlier, they may be able to avoid programming such as alternate courses.
