The definition of technology that resonates with me the most is from Muffoletto (1994).
“Muffoletto observes that, “Technology is commonly thought of in terms of gadgets, instruments, machines, and devices…” but that it “[I]s not a collection of machines and devices, but a way of acting.” Educational technology is a combination of the processes and tools involved in addressing educational needs and problems, with an emphasis on applying the most current tools, such as computers and their related technologies.”
I chose this definition because when I think of technology, I often only think of machines and devices, and I believe a lot of people think that way as well. This explanation reminds us that we need to think of technology on a broader spectrum. Technology is not just tools, but a combination of tools and processes, and this is in line with my own personal opinion of what technology should be defined as – especially as an Instructional Resource Teacher. I experience students daily with high educational needs and problems, therefore I am always using educational technology in my class. However it is not just the technology that addresses student need, it is also how we use it that allows students to learn. Technology can sort of be looked at as a means to an end. We use it to help solve a problem, learn something new, create something, etc. which is why it is so beneficial to use in educational settings.
