Health Revolution – Apple Watch

A health revolution – Communicating health using Apple Watch by Jessie Young

Reflection

The reason I chose this topic is because health and wellness is imperative to my job and because I finally bit the bullet and purchased an Apple Watch last year. I appreciate the flexibility the watch gives me to go ‘hands free’ but still focus on gathering fitness data. The information I gather on a daily is as follows: steps, standing time, and minutes of exercise. I chose to further explore the history of Apple and how they have revolutionized communication in health when it comes to the general population.

Health literacy is often overlooked when literacy is discussed. In an education setting literacy usually pertains to interpreting fiction and non-ficton text as well as mathematics. Health information such as graphs and statistics are often overlooked by the general population as they can be hard to decipher and take some background knowledge. With Apple Watch and the Health apps accompanying it, it bridges that gap between academia and the rest of the population. It empowers people to be more actively engaged in their health and to use technology as a means of communicating what is going on in their body.
