How to visualize and prepare for natural hazards

What would happen if Vancouver was hit by a Tsunami? I learned some critical GIS analytical skills to visualize areas in danger and gather useful information on what facilities would be in danger.

Click here to see a map of the City of Vancouver with land use areas that would be affected from a Tsunami and highlighted proposed signage.

To figure out what areas would be in danger, I first buffered the shoreline to 1km off the coast. I then reclassified the DEM to separate anything that was below 15m elevation. After this, I intersected the new buffered area to areas below 15m elevation to create a distinguishable danger zone for easier analysis.

City of Vancouver’s total area in danger is about 15%. To get this answer I divided the sum of Vancouver’s total area with the total sum of the area in danger.

The following healthcare and educational facilities would be in danger:

Education Health Care
St. Anthony of Padua

Ecole Rose des Vents

Heritage 3R’s School

Vancouver Montessori School

False Creek Elementary

Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design

Henry Hudson Elementary

Institute of Indigenous Government

False Creek Residence

Broadway Pentecostal Lodge

Yaletown House Society

Willa Cathay Care Home

To get these answers I clipped both the layers containing schools and healthcare to my danger zone layer and looked at each new layers attribute tables.
