English 301 is a UBC online course that focusses on technical writing. Taught by Dr. Erika Paterson from the Department of English, it focusses on the principles of written and online communications in business and professional situations that the 21st century is consumed in. Dedicated solely as an online classroom environment, the use of a computer and ready access to an internet connection is required. Additionally, the main course text, Technical Writing 13th Edition, is an online textbook. This course can be of interest to students from a variety of disciplines such as commerce, science, education, and health sciences and may also be of interest to students in Arts Co-Op and other Co-Op programs.
Offered over a four-month period, students will be evaluated with much of the grade distribution weighed on smaller assignment practice, to avoid anxiety. The course is divided into four units and concludes with three major writing assignments; a Formal Report, an Application Package on Linked-in, and a Web Folio. The expectation is that these projects will be professional and presentable outside of the academic situation.
This class is ideal for students that need help creating an adequate representation of themselves and their technical abilities for a prospective professional career.
