When people ask me why I decided to become a teacher, I share about my ‘teacher moment’ as a young child. My most inspirational memories involved pretending to be a teacher for my stuff animals when I was only 5 years old. I can recall creating worksheets and tests for my ‘students’. Even more fascinating was that I graded those assignments and provided feedback for them. In terms of classroom management, I remember disciplining my ‘students’ when they did not pay attention in class. They were required to stay after class to discuss possible ways to help them to better focus in class. As told by my mother, I was very happy and it was obvious that I enjoyed being the ‘teacher’. The ‘teaching moments’ that lasted for several months were part of my most memorable moments as a young child.

Growing up in beautiful British Columbia has enabled me to appreciate a multicultural society and to explore many of my passions. Some of my favourite activities include attending cultural festivities, exploring farmer’s markets, hiking, biking, swimming, walks along the beach, and spending time with family and friends. My enjoyments also extend to my love for travelling because I believe that in order for learning to happen, it must be experienced and lived.
For the past 10 years I have been an active participant in my own community. I volunteered at summer camps, taught English and baking classes, taught swimming lessons, and am currently a swim coach in a community swim club. I am also the coordinator for training adolescents to become swim coaches one day.
My experiences working with children and adolescents over the years have developed into a love for teaching. After I obtained my undergraduate degree at UBC with a Bachelor of Science in Food Nutrition and Health, I enrolled in UBC’s Bachelor of Education program (secondary), majoring in Home Economics. My passion for home economics has stemmed from my personal interests in nutrition, sewing, and the study of family relationships.
