Best Work

Throughout ENGL 301, there were many opportunities to practice and hone my skills in technical writing. The continual peer review and feedback processes were especially helpful, and contributed to the fine tuning of my assignments. Below is a summary of my best work. These assignments demonstrate both my proficiency and improvement as a technical writer.

Definition Assignment: Link to Definition Assignment
The purpose of the definition assignment was to define a technical term to a non-technical audience. Given my background in biological science, I chose the term “polymerase chain reaction”. I found this assignment challenging! I was used to having a technical audience, so I worked hard to explain the term for a non-scientific audience. The peer review was helpful in the editing process. The final version reflects changes recommended from the peer review, and a better understanding of clear writing.

Formal Report Proposal: Link to Formal Report Proposal
One of the components of our formal report consisted of writing a formal report proposal. The purpose of the proposal was to provide a broad overview of our formal report, including the area of concern and proposed research. I had originally wrote a feasibility report proposal, but have changed it to be a causal report proposal. I have also edited it to have a more positive tone. After all, an audience is generally more receptive to positive language! While the process of rewriting the proposal was challenging, I am proud of the result.

Complaint Letter: Link to Complaint Letter
One of our professional writing assignments was to write a complaint letter to a company. I was unfamiliar with writing a business letter, so I took this opportunity to practice professional writing. I found it a little challenging to express dissatisfaction and the you-attitude, but it was a handy exercise. I learned that a polite and non-accusatory tone makes a significant difference!

Peer Review of Formal Report Draft: Link to Peer Review of Formal Report Draft
A regular assignment throughout the course was to peer review team members’ works. I found the peer review process incredibly helpful. In writing a peer review, I practiced professional writing and critical analysis which was applicable to self-editing. One of my challenges was the inclusion of examples for my team member. I believe this peer review reflects my improvements in adding examples and overall writing skills.
