Hi there, and welcome to my blog for the ENGL 301 course, Technical Writing!
This course is designed for students to gain experience in writing for business, professional, and technical audiences. As students, we will have many opportunities to practice and refine our skills in writing for these audiences. This will be done independently and collaboratively under the guidance of our course instructor. Key assignments for us to develop such skills will be in the creation of a formal report, an online portfolio or Web Folio, and a LinkedIn application package. We will also have smaller assignments for practice, such as emails, memos, and peer reviews. At the end of the course, we will have refined our writing and self-editing skills to become confident communicators.
Our course is divided into four units:
1) Principles of technical and business writing, where we will learn and concepts relevant to the mentioned categories – these include audience, tone, clarity, and presentation.
2) Report proposal design, where we will collaborate with other students to design a report proposal for our formal report. We will also begin developing a resume as a part of ongoing assignment.
3) Report draft and resume development, where we will continue working on our formal report and begin building a job application package.
4) Report finalization and social networking strategies, where we will finish our formal report and practice social network strategies. We will also complete our job application package.
By the end of this course, I hope learn a variety of skills. I specifically wish to refine my ability to communicate effectively to different audiences, design an effective resume for potential employers, and develop social networking strategies to help in my career development.
