Applications to Practice

First and foremost, I want to incorporate music into my classroom as much as possible in order to foster a positive and engaging environment for my students. I believe that this will help to create and environment where student’s want to learn, and are excited to be a part of. I plan on using student information sheets to gain information on the types of music they are interested in, and incorporate their music into the classroom on different occasions, such as when students are entering the classroom, or during project work. Further, I will allow my students to listen to their music with headphones during individual work time, or audibly during group work time if it is not a distraction to others in the class. Lastly, an avenue I would really like to explore is the integration of music into test taking, for students who wish to listen. Anxiety is a huge problem for some students while taking a test, and if music can help them calm down, and perhaps even help them perform better, it is something that I would like to look into. I realize the potential dangers of this, but finding a solution that works for both the student and teacher is something I am interested in finding. Not to mention, it has also been shown that people perform better on tests when the study the same way they take the test (Welsh), so if student’s who study with music were able to listen to music during the test, increased performance may result. I plan on incorporating music into my classroom in many different ways, and recording what I observe throughout my practicum to get a better sense of how it can affect each and every student. I am looking forward to being able to update my inquiry with my findings.
