Philosophy

‘Involve me and I learn’. I am a strong believer in creating a classroom that students want to be a part of. I believe in helping guide students through their individual learning experiences, creating an exciting, relevant and unique class setting. I will work hard to ensure my classroom is a safe environment, where students feel comfortable, and are encouraged to share their ideas and ask questions. Further, I will challenge my students to think critically and look deeper. I want my students to understand why what they’re learning is important, but also see how interesting, relevant and powerful business education can be! So, why is what you’ll learn important?

From your first cup of coffee or tea in the morning, until the second your lights go out at the end of the day, we are surrounded by and a part of the business world. New products, services, and advertisements are just some of the things that bombard us around every corner, competing for a moment of your time. Not only are we constantly surrounded by this business world, but also actively involved and engaged with it, sometimes without even knowing. Your favourite spot to eat, your beloved sports team, and the school or job that you attend each and every day are all businesses (among many more) looking to make money by influencing you. I want each of my students to understand the roles that businesses play in our lives, how they develop and change, and to see how, and just how often we are specifically targeted by advertisements and promotions. I believe that business education is an extremely powerful tool that can provide students with knowledge to not only succeed in commerce, but also create amazing change in the world through technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.

I want to be different, a breath of fresh air and excitement. We live in a world where technology has the ability to enhance learning, and I plan to embrace and involve this technology within my classroom. Further, as the business world evolves around us, it is important to stay current and relevant in our teaching. This evolution is the most exciting part of business (and teaching), as we have the opportunity to tailor lessons, units and classes to current events, new companies, and more. I am dedicated to keeping up and staying relevant in my teaching because of this opportunity, and believe that this is paramount to getting the attention of students and keeping them excited and engaged. My classroom will incorporate activities and projects that reflect the current business world, and students will be challenged to make connections and apply their knowledge to real world situations. Further I believe that being involved in the school means more than being active in the classroom. I have been, and will continue to lead extracurriculars, clubs and sports teams, as well as be involved within my community, as this is an extremely important factor in building relationships with students, parents and others.

Overall, I want my students to question the world around them, and see through a lens that of understanding how companies operate, why they send us the messages that they do, and how we fit into all of this. Lastly, I believe that physical activity can and should be incorporated into the classroom in order to keep students’ minds and bodies refreshed and ready to learn. Whether a stretch is needed, or a quick active session, I want my class to stay energized, and not have to simply sit still for 80 minutes. I look forward to facilitating the learning of students for years to come, and hope to have a positive impact on all!
