Reflecting on Unit Two – LinkedIn Profile, Formal Report Proposal and Outline, Progress Report and Peer Review
February 24, 2016
This is the second of four reflection blogs that will be posted at the end of each unit. These reflections document my experience and thoughts of my progression through English 301.
Unit two was comprised of two major assignments: designing a formal report and creating a LinkedIn profile. Other assignments included: peer-review of a team member’s formal report proposal, creating a formal report outline and a progress report to the instructor. For this reflection post, I will focus on my experience on those two assignments.
LinkedIn Profile
As one of the fastest growing professional networking systems, I looked forward to creating a LinkedIn. I really enjoyed connecting with friends and past colleges on LinkedIn. I found that there was a huge variation in each person’s profile and pinpointing what I liked in others’ profiles and applying it to mine. The two most difficult thing I found when I was creating an effective profile was ensuring that I remained professional, yet personable, and finding a good profile picture. I plan to continue using and building my LinkedIn profile in the future as I grow and gain experience as an individual.
Format Report
For the formal report, we were asked to investigate and recommend an action on an occurring problem within our community/society. I found it extremely difficult choosing a topic and eventually decided on determining the effectiveness of egg labeling in grocery stores. Writing the report proposal wasn’t really difficult, however, I found a lack of scientific literature covering the topic. I was genuinely excited to research and investigate my topic, however, after consultation and further research, I came upon a few issues. The largest of issues imposed on the ability for me to conduct my surveys (store managers were not comfortable with me soliciting their customers for my surveys). I decided the best action to take was to switch my topic, which again I found difficult. I recently decided to switch my topic to determining the public’s perception and awareness on the health issues of purebred dogs. However, I am still on the details of the study. I am a little worried at this point and hope to finalize my project soon.
Peer-Review
I revised Timothy Goh’s formal report proposal on the feasibility of implementing hand dryers in UBC washrooms. He did a great job researching and clearly communicating the importance of being able to adequately dry their hands. Along with a few issues with grammar, I made some small suggestions on the structure of a few sentences. Peer-reviewing another’s work allowed me to critically review my own work and incorporate strategies and techniques that improved my own report.
In conclusion, this unit expanded my knowledge and writing technique. I am glad I finally created a LinkedIn profile and excited at the opportunities it can lead to. I am also anxious, but looking forward to the next steps of completing my formal research project and continue to look forward to improving my writing skills throughout this course.
